Pierre Balmain, the most famous of France’s fashion designers



Pierre Balmain was born on 18th May, 1914, in the village of Saint Jean in the French province of Savoye. He was an only child and his father who was a shopkeeper, had high hopes for him.


In 1932 he went to art school in Paris to study architecture but his heart was not in his studies. Even after he was designing buildings, he surrounded his sketches with designs for dresses. It was not long before he decided to work with chiffon and wool than with steel and concrete. He took some of his dressing designs to Molyneux, one of the leading couturiers (fashion dress-makers) of Paris and Molyneux was so impressed...continue
